Best Toothpaste Ever?

Dear Friends,

I have been on a deep dive regarding toothpaste recently and I want to share with you what I have learned. When I told my wife I was doing this she asked if toothpaste is really necessary. My answer was twofold: 1) Toothpaste isn’t really necessary if you eat a Keto or Carnivore diet because you’re not consuming sugars and starches. I’m betting that less than 2% of our patients fit into this category. 2) Everyone else can benefit from using a remineralizing toothpaste. Let’s talk about fluoride before we go further. Fluoride has been around for decades and is proven to help remineralize teeth by replacing the calcium ion when our enamel starts to break down. After years of research I think fluoride is great as a topical remineralizing agent. I think it is ridiculous that fluoride has been added to most city’s water systems. It makes zero sense to me to add fertilizer waste fluoride to our drinking water. It has been proven to lower IQ and make bones brittle and more likely to fracture. The only people who might, in theory, benefit from drinking fluoridated water are kids that are still developing their teeth but the fertilizer waste fluoride that cities use is garbage. I filter my water to remove fluoride and other contaminants. I would encourage you to filter your water and avoid drinking fluoride, especially if you are pregnant or nursing as it has been shown to cross the placenta. Now, let’s talk about hydroxyapatite. Our enamel and our bones are made mostly of hydroxyapatite. NASA started researching hydroxyapatite to help keep astronauts’ teeth and bones healthy while they were in space in the 80’s. Hydroxyapatite began being used in toothpaste form in 2006 and is starting to gain popularity. I believe that it should be the main ingredient in toothpaste and studies are showing that it is as, or more effective, than fluoride at remineralizing enamel. The companies that we get our toothpastes from get their Nano-hydroxyapatite(n-HAp) from a U.S. supplier and they make sure it is made as a certain particle size so it is most effective at remineralizing teeth. Not all hydroxyapatites are made equal and I would avoid using a product from which you don’t know where and how it was manufactured. We carry two brands of remineralizing dentifrices. The one I have recommended for several years is and is only available as a prescription through a dentist is CTX4 made by the Carifree company. CTX4 is a gel and is usually only used when you brush at night so that you get remineralizing benefits after eating and drinking all day. The second brand we carry is from Dr. Jen’s company and it has quickly become my favorite toothpaste ever. Dr. Jen is a dentist and spent many years researching what should go into the ideal toothpaste. Her studies led her to formulate her pastes with 10% nano-hydroxyapatite, which she found to be the ideal amount of n-HAp for remineralizing enamel and she mixed it with all natural essential oils for reducing bacteria and taste. She makes three different pastes: 1)Super paste combines fluoride and n-Hap 2)Remineralizing paste w/o fluoride and 3)Remineralizing kids toothpaste w/o fluoride and has strawberry flavor instead of mint. We carry the first two in our office for purchase oryou can order online at www.drjennatural.com

I’m currently using both the version with fluoride and the one without. Just to try them both out. Dr. Jen’s studies are showing that remineralization is as effective in the version without fluoride as the version with fluoride so I have full faith in both that no matter which one you use you will get the benefits of remineralizing your teeth on a twice daily basis.

In Good Health, Dr. Steve
