Legislative Session – Dental Hygiene local anesthesia bill

Dr. Cook went to the Texas State Capitol this morning to testify before today’s legislative session regarding a bill proposing to allow dental hygienists to administer local anesthesia to patients. Our state is currently one of only five in the nation that does not allow dental hygienists to do so! Dentists are not even permitted to delegate the administration of local anesthetic to their educated, trained and licensed hygienists in order for patients to receive pain-free and efficient treatment. Forty-four other states, Washington D.C. and the military allow this delegated authority, and a majority of Texas dentists desire this right. Even if a dentist personally opposes this bill, he or she would not be required to institute it in his or her own practice – it is a freedom of choice bill! Despite a majority of their membership supporting this bill, the Texas Dental Association has been fighting against it, which is perplexing to us and many of our colleagues in the local dental industry. The current situation means higher costs for patients as well as a disrupted workflow for the doctors. We are very hopeful that this bill passes.
